Kamala Harris Pledges to Continue Trump's Border Wall Construction
Kamala Harris, who has been criticized for her handling of the illegal immigration crisis in the US, has now committed to spending hundreds of millions of dollars on the construction of a wall on the southern US border. This is a significant shift from her previous stance, where she labeled such a plan as "un-American" during the Trump administration.
Harris's Change in Immigration Policy
As reported by Axios, Harris seems to be taking a 'more hawkish' stance on immigration, contrasting her previous liberal positions. This comes as the Trump campaign invests heavily in attack ads criticizing the Biden-Harris administration's border policies.
Harris recently announced at the Democratic National Convention that she would support a bipartisan border security bill proposed by Senators James Lankford and Chris Murphy. This bill calls for the allocation of hundreds of millions of unspent funds to continue the construction of Trump's wall.
Senator Lankford explained to Axios, "The bill requires the Trump border wall. It sets the standards that were established during the Trump administration: where it will be built, how it has to be built, the height, the type, everything during the Trump construction."
Harris's Past Opposition to the Border Wall
In 2017, Harris, who was then a Senator, criticized Trump's border wall project as a "stupid use of money," and vowed to block any funding for it. However, during her tenure as the "Border Czar," illegal crossings at the southern border increased by at least 140% compared to the figures during the Trump administration, as per the House Committee on Homeland Security.
Following the Democrats' control of the House in 2019, they opposed the large-scale funding Trump requested for the wall, leading to a government shutdown. Although some funding was eventually approved, it was significantly less than what Trump had requested. In response, Trump declared a national emergency in February 2019 to divert funds from other federal projects to the wall's construction, which faced numerous legal challenges.
Harris's Recent Controversy
Harris faced criticism last week for a campaign video that prominently displayed images of Trump's partially built US-Mexico border wall. She claimed that her experience as a "border-state prosecutor" would enable her to complete the project. Even ABC News pointed out the stark contrast between her current stance and her past opposition to the border wall.
Bottom Line
The shift in Harris's stance on the border wall construction is a significant departure from her previous position. It raises questions about the consistency of her policies and her ability to effectively manage the immigration crisis. What are your thoughts on this matter?
