Pro-Palestine Protesters Gather at the New York Stock Exchange
A group of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in Lower Manhattan, calling for an end to Israel's war in Gaza against the Hamas terror organization. The demonstrators also criticized US defense firms like Raytheon and Lockheed Martin for profiting from war. However, the protesters were seemingly unaware that the NYSE has long since relocated to New Jersey, and the building they were targeting is primarily a television studio.
Activists from the Jewish Voice for Peace
The protesters appeared to be from the far-left organization, 'Jewish Voice for Peace' (JVP). The group used social media to share information about their demonstration at the NYSE.
"Hundreds of Jewish New Yorkers and friends are shutting down business as usual at the New York Stock Exchange right now to demand the US stop arming Israel," JVP announced on social media.
The group further stated, "At this very moment, the Israeli military is massacring family after family in North Gaza in a war of extermination. So hundreds of Jews and friends are shutting down the New York Stock Exchange to demand the US stop arming Israel and profiting from genocide."
JVP's Symbolic Actions at the Protest
During the protest, JVP activists dressed the 'Fearless Girl' statue in front of the NYSE in a shirt that read: "Stop Arming Israel." Activists also chained themselves to the doors as part of their demonstration.
The group made a statement against the Biden administration, rejecting the notion that the $18 billion fund provided to the Israeli government is for “Jewish safety.”
The Protest's Impact
Despite the group's claims of shutting down the NYSE, technically, no shutdown occurred. Most market trades are conducted by algorithms, not traders on the NYSE floor.
The Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs has labeled JVP as a "Jewish far-left, anti-Zionist" group known for "direct action," some of which have been conducted on school campuses.
Bottom Line
The protest by the pro-Palestinian group at the NYSE highlights the ongoing debate about the US's role in the Israel-Palestine conflict. While the demonstration may not have resulted in the shutdown of the NYSE, it certainly brought attention to the group's cause. What are your thoughts on this protest and the issues it raises?
